In March 2010 we drove and ferried more than 6,000 miles (it was at least 6,017 miles but that doesn’t include all the running around at each stop). It was probably close to 6,500 when all was said and done. I would like to note that we did take THE LONG WAY!

A year and 8 months later we decide to do a mini version. Plan our attack, calculate cost, dig out moving supplies, buy more, pack everything, squeeze in workouts, vet visits, car repairs, the holidays, and doctors appointments all while cramming in every last hour at work possible which typically meant 55-60 hour weeks. That said we still had the VAST MAJORITY of packing to do New Year’s weekend- really everything but the books. For weeks we had fretted about getting a 75-foot moving truck into the parking lot and the possibility to block off parking spots. We both imagined a full on 16-wheeler, but mercifully, it was closer to half that size. I’m pretty sure only one lady gave us the stink eye. Thankfully we had two wonderful people and the truck driver to help us load the hardest Tetris puzzle imaginable- the moving truck. We even went past our square footage but he let it go and didn’t charge us. This felt like the hardest part was behind us and really it was.
Next was the frustrating part. Living with Matt’s dad while still trying to work, finding out we needed car repairs, and then the actual drive… with the cats. Without them we could have had more fun and taken our time, but you can’t just leave them in the car while you go for a hike somewhere when it’s January. We couldn’t do that during the last move because it was either wicked cold or unrelenting heat.
The summary of our Virginia to Oregon move is 2,901 miles from Manassas to the door of our new place. We each got to knock 4 states off our “haven’t been to yet” list. For me there was Indiana, Illinois, Nebraska, and Utah. (I’ve been to the SLC and Ohare airports, but I don’t count layovers as having been to a state.) For Matt there was Indiana, Iowa, Nebraska, Wyoming, Total we drove through 13 states- thanks east coast for your tiny, odd shapes. 77 boxes: 19 XXS (beer boxes), 18 small, 21 medium, 11 large, 5 specialty (wardrobe, pictures, dish barrel, etc), 3 green totes plus furniture for a total around 560 cubic feet.
My verdict: LET’S NEVER DO THIS AGAIN.
