Week 1: matt and i went to get the car and truck's safety and emissions testing done. the car didn't pass the safety test because of some "larger than dollar bill" cracks in the windshield and a broken headlight, tail light, and center break light. I managed to replace the broken tail light and headlight myself during a break at work. the center break light though is apparently hard to replace even for trained mechanics... why?! so when i had an oil change and the second safety inspection done i had them fix that too. the windshield was a couple hundred bucks and the guy came out to my office and replaced it in 30 minutes while i watched. it was neat... see it for yourself below. (we didn't get the glass replaced till about 2 weeks later)
removing the rim/ old sealant
it's a much cleaner process than i would have guessed
new sealant goes in with a monster of a glue gun
tape to keep the face lift place. the guy even transferred the "ak pride" stickers!
a little crooked, but it was really sweet of him.
that first weekend we drove to georgia to return the truck. i was really bummed. i was so excited to have beater truck (stick shift too) and it wasn't going to be worth paying to have it fixed up to pass the tests so we gave it back to my grandpa.
bye truck, i'll miss you
week 2: seattle and the olympic peninsula! we flew to seattle where we met up with our moms and drove out to his grandma's house for the weekend. it was a blast! we stayed up till 2 am drinking wine and playing Phase 10. grandma won, of course... she always comes from behind to beat us. while there i got approval on my choice of wedding dress from the ladies, received beautiful rings to be my engagement ring and matt's wedding band. his is his late grandpa's- a custom ring made in alaska and perfect fit. mine is also a custom ring made in alaska... it has a story but i'll save that for another entry! we worked on wedding invites and it was a royal pain. our printer here decided it did not like the heavy stock paper and gave up it duties. so we went looking for someone else who could do it. after a few failed attempts, we ended up at office max (or depot, is there a difference?) a few more failed attempts and misunderstandings and it worked out well enough.
week 3: i started my new tasks at work in "the back". after being back there a few weeks i like it satisfactorily. i find being around people and the constant banter and pranks between my coworkers amusing. i've realized coworkers can do a lot to improve or ruin your daily work experience. as for my tasks, i pretty much play 'where's waldo'. when i find him i put a point there and then i go back and connect all the dots. it's not challenging. i'm still looking into other options.
week 4: matt went out of town for the weekend down to charlottsville to visit some friends. i stayed, cleaned, relaxed, etc. didn't blog. sorry, guys! april came out to visit- yay!- so she got to see the new place and get caught up on each other's lives.
week 5: we started watching 'firefly' and it's been taking up our evenings. it's a sci-fi space show, but with a western twist. i recommend it. it's only 14 episodes (1 season) and a movie, "serenity". we also watch "the kids are alright" and we both loved it. rent it. annette benning is fabulous. if you want another great movie see "the women". matt says it's a chick flick and i suppose it is, but in more than one sense of the word. every person in the movie is female... there are no male extras, voices, etc. and as much of the crew is female as well. it has annette benning, meg ryan, debra messing, jada pinkett smith, eva mendes, and a slew of greats like candice bergen and carrie fisher. enough about movies.
his younger brother wedding gifted us his honda prelude as a second vehicle since he wont need it in boston. dave will be staying in boston for his doctorate because he got accepted into BC! congrats to the future Dr. Dave!
we spent the weekend visiting the dmv to get me a new license and new plates for the car. we stood in line for an hour and a half just to get a ticket to wait another 40 minutes to actually get called up. in.sane. but that's what we get for waiting till 2 days before the tags expire which meant going to the dmv on the last saturday of the month. im glad everything from now on can be renewed over the internet.
week 6: i am approved for overtime. it's a double-edged sword. more hours = more money. running double shifts of people on the project means i have to be done by 4 when the next guy comes in which means i need to get to work by 4 am which means i get up at 3 am. FML. i've survived the first week. i was dropping matt off at the metro in the mornings but now he has to drive or walk or take the bus. but now we, again, don't have a second vehicle. last night night matt went to pick dave up at the airport and 30 seconds after getting on the interstate a vehicle runs into the back driver's corner of the honda and sends him spinning across 3 lanes of traffic and slamming twice into the cement median wall. the a-hole who did it never even stopped. he could have been killed for crying out loud! praise the Lord, he came out without a scratch on him. the police were there in minutes and ruled it a hit and run. we all went today to get stuff out of the car and the towing yard. it's amazing the damage wasn't worse that it was considering he was going 55 mph and there were other cars on the road. geico is accepting the claim of a hit and run as an uninsured motorist.
where the jerk hit matt
where the car hit the median
matt's dad is sad about the death of his second mid-life crisis car
matt is just glad he survived
